La galette des rois, a French Tradition

“La galette des rois” is a French tradition to celebrate the Epiphany, the arrival of the three wise men. Everywhere in France,  at home, at the office, and even in schools you share a galette des rois several times during the month of January .

Inside each galette is hidden a “fève”. This is a small porcelaine figurine. If you find the fève in your slice of galette, you are declared the King or Queen and you get the paper crown.

The typical galette is made of puff pastry filled with almond cream. You can find some in the Seattle area.

This year I tried the galette from Petit Pierre Bakery and Le Panier but I still need to visit Le Fournil, and La Parisienne.

Petit Pierre Bakery

Freshly arrived from France, Alex and Laure decided to start a French bakery in Magnolia Village. Named after their son, Petit Pierre Bakery has been open for less than 2 months.

Laure’s specialities are petits choux, huge madeleines, macarons and all traditional French pastries. My favorite so far? Pistachio madeleines, chocolate petits choux, and the lemon tarts

The other day, I stopped by after a walk in Discovery Park for lunch. I bought a combo; a soup with a quiche or a sandwich. The made from scratch lentil and carrots soup was delicious.

If you live in Magnolia’s neighborhood or go to Discovery Park, stop by! They are so friendly and hardworking and their bakery smells like France !

Trophy Cupcakes… and Party!

I don’t really like cupcakes. Most of the time they are plain, dry, and too sweet.

But I need to confess that I like the Triple Chocolate Cupcake from Trophy Cupcakes. Made with French and Belgian Chocolate and in a mini size, they are realllllly good! With less sugar, they would be perfect!

Each year, around October 1st (my daughter’s birthday), we order minis. Here are this year’s cupcakes!
