I’m gonna be the Queen of Pies

I thought I knew how to bake tarts… but I wanted to get more recipes and learn a few tips and tricks.

My Sweet and Savory Tarts Class at The Pantry was a total success! Not only did I learn a lot, but it was fun, friendly and last but not least… delicious! Yes, I had a bite of each tart, pie and quiche.

Cooking classes take place in the back of the Delancey Pizza Restaurant in north Ballard. The room is cosy and really looks like a Pantry.

Our Teacher, Megan Gordon (www.asweetspoonful.com and author of Whole-Grain Mornings) was amazing, super nice and explained everything.

Happy students at today's Sweet and Savory Tarts Class. And now: time for an instructor iced tea + nap!

We learned how to  properly prepare a good dough with some advice on ingredient choices and then made, in group of 2 or 3, different tarts and quiches:

– Savory apple tart with mustard and sharp cheddar
– Tomato tart with creme fraiche
– Artichoke and ricotta tart
– Quiche with Asparagus and goat cheese
– Strawberry Rhubarb Tart

I had the chance to have a spot for this class at the last minute (not really the last minute but the day before). I am very lucky as all classes are full booked till end of September and their wait lists are pretty long. But I hope I will be able to do another one soon.

The London Plane again

I already talked about The London Plane when they just opened last year.

I like these kind of places where you can, in one stop, have lunch, pick up my favorite Jam, buy a present for a friend, or grab some pastries or even flowers. You can also come in for a coffee in the morning.

A few days ago I had a nice lunch there with my parents.

In a light and warm space, we enjoyed tasty dips and salads:

– 3 dips: Beet Hummus with harissa oil – Pecan, Nettle and Feta Pesto  – Split Fava Bean Dal, mint and coconut

– Mix of 3 salads: : Brassica raab, Celeriac, lentils, turmeric, ginger –  Roasted baby carrots, spring onions, fennel, bulgur, preserved lemon  – Chick peas with olives, currants, cauliflower and pine nuts

We also appreciated an attentive service. In a few words, we had a great time.

Don’t forget to go upstairs and have a look through the window at the baker kneading the bread.

Tip: We made a reservation on Opentable to be sure to have a table.

Parfait in a Jar at Trove

Trove is part BBQ restaurant, part Noodle Bar, part Parfait stand and part Bar.
However, I’d like to focus on the parfaits. At the window of what looks like a food truck, order one of the 6 parfaits offered.

I don’t like to drink in a mason jar (read more here) but I am completely fine having a Parfait in a jar (same for Chef Philippe’s fabulous Chocolate mousse).

$6 and you get $1 off if you give them the jar back after you are done.
Parfait  Stand open 12-2pm and 5-11pm

We would not recommend the BBQ as we were disappointed (coming from Revel and Joule owners) but we have not tried the noodle bar yet.
